Today, however, they aren't just religious events. They are great date spots and beloved summer traditions where you can experience the extraordinary—everyone enjoys them in their own way! From eating delicious street food to dancing to the music, it's an incredibly exciting culture that foreign tourists can fully enjoy right alongside the locals.

Shinjuku Summer Matsuri Schedule

1. Traditional Beauty & Passionate Dance: "Kagurazaka Matsuri"

Held in Kagurazaka, an area famous for its beautiful cobblestone streets, this festival is full of traditional charm.

The first two days feature the "Hozuki Ichi" (ground cherry market), where people strolling in Yukata (summer kimonos) buy beautiful plants. The final two days host the "Awa Odori" parade—a passionate traditional Japanese dance that wraps the entire street in an infectious rhythm!

2. Soul-Shaking Okinawan Beats: "22nd Shinjuku Eisa Matsuri"

The main streets around Shinjuku Station completely transform into an Okinawan summer tradition!

"Eisa" is a traditional Okinawan event. The dynamic dancing, combined with the powerful beat of the drums and brave shouts, will literally make your blood boil with excitement!

3. "AKIRA" Anime Music in a Skyscraper Jungle: "Kecak Matsuri"

This is the true essence of Shinjuku! Held in the valley of Nishi-Shinjuku's skyscrapers, this festival creates an unbelievable, one-of-a-kind atmosphere.

It features the Balinese hypnotic chanting dance "Kecak" and traditional "Gamelan" percussion, alongside an incredible live performance of the symphonic suite from the world-famous Anime movie "AKIRA". 4. A Gen Z Matsuri by Uni Students: "KABUNATSU"

Held at Shinjuku's new landmark, the Tokyu Kabukicho Tower, this is a brand-new type of festival planned by students from Waseda University!

You can enjoy a massive, genre-crossing performance battle—from traditional Japanese Yosakoi and Taiko drums to Hip-Hop and Idol groups! There are even special perks if you show up wearing a Yukata.

5. A Once-in-a-10-Year Rare Experience: "Suwa Shrine Reitaisai"

If you want to experience the sacred atmosphere of Japanese Shinto, this is the place. This year is incredibly special, marking a "Grand Festival held only once every 10 years"!
